Kathryn Gauthier

Kathryn Gauthier: Visual & Performing Artist

Multidisciplinary artist Kathryn Gauthier received her BA in Fine Art from Emmanuel College, Boston, MA in 1979.  She went on to study the performing arts at Dean Jr. College, Franklin, MA, majoring in Music/Theater/Dance and completed a 2 year program of concentrated study in Acting and Directing at the Trinity Rep Conservatory, Providence, RI in 1989.  After moving to Chicago in 1992, she continued simultaneously pursuing careers in both the visual and performing arts.

She has competed successfully in local and national exhibitions concentrated in Massachusetts and Chicago area.  Her work can be found in the collections of the Beverly Art Center, Beverly, IL, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago IL, Millville Public Library, Millville MA, and private collections.

In a series of semi-abstract mixed media paintings Gauthier draws inspiration from avant-garde jazz, working from sketches made during live performance.  The resulting imagery conjures the music’s fluid vibrant nature. She has collaborated successfully with jazz musicians, and poets in improvised vocal stage performance combined with exhibitions of her paintings.  In 2001 she released a jazz vocal CD, “First Steps” which received favorable reviews and facilitated her career in vocal performance.

She is concurrently developing a series inspired by the urban landscape as reflected in the glass and steel architecture.  She also maintains a connection to realism through still life and landscape painting. “I find the process of observing and communing with the beauty in everyday things very grounding.”

Music, theater, and art cross over in many ways in her career.  In addition to performing in festivals and music venues around the city, she has copyrighted over 100 songs in genres of folk, blues, jazz, and music for children.  She has collaborated with the Chicago Mask Ensemble, the Chicago Storytellers Guild, Insight Arts, and teaches workshops in the visual and performing arts.  Gauthier also maintains a business as a decorative artist in the field of interior design.
